About the Role
We are looking for a highly experienced Senior Data & Backend Engineer to join our Healthcare Analytics Platform team.
This is a hybrid engineering role combining data engineering, database development and Python backend/API development. The successful candidate will be responsible for building reliable healthcare data pipelines, analytics-ready data models, savings opportunity engines and secure backend APIs.
The platform integrates medical and pharmacy claims, eligibility, invoices, reference pricing, risk stratification and savings opportunity analysis for self-funded health plans. Data accuracy, performance, reconciliation, security and auditability are critical requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Data Engineering and Database Development
- Design, build and maintain reliable batch and data-processing pipelines for medical claims, pharmacy claims, eligibility, invoices, reference pricing and related healthcare datasets.
- Develop and optimise complex SQL queries, stored procedures, data transformations and analytics models.
- Design and maintain data solutions using Snowflake, PostgreSQL and SQL-based platforms.
- Work with Microsoft SQL Server and T-SQL where required for existing platform components and integrations.
- Build efficient data models and read models to support analytics, reporting and savings opportunity engines.
- Implement data validation across source, staging and warehouse layers.
- Develop source-to-target reconciliation processes with documented tolerance thresholds.
- Design quarantine and exception-handling workflows for invalid or inconsistent data.
- Support scheduled data refreshes, production monitoring and incident resolution.
- Implement retry mechanisms, monitoring, alerting and operational runbooks.
- Optimise database performance, indexing, query execution and warehouse utilisation.
Backend and API Engineering
- Design and develop production-grade REST APIs using Python and frameworks such as FastAPI or Flask.
- Develop APIs for:
- Savings opportunity calculations
- Member 360/member profiles
- Healthcare metrics and analytics
- Evidence and claim-level drill-down
- Methodology disclosure
- Operational workflows
- Develop deterministic and testable multi-step savings engines for areas such as:
- Site of care
- Pharmacy
- Utilisation
- Reference pricing
- Healthcare cost optimisation
- Implement versioned business rules, benchmarks and calculation methodologies.
- Ensure API calculations reconcile with underlying source claims and analytical datasets.
- Implement robust API validation, error handling, logging, monitoring and observability.
- Support authentication, Single Sign-On (SSO), Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) and PHI access auditing.
- Develop unit, integration and data-quality tests.
- Work closely with product, analytics, QA and engineering teams to deliver production-ready solutions.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional software, backend or data engineering experience.
- Strong hands-on Python development experience.
- Strong production experience with FastAPI, Flask or an equivalent Python API framework.
- Excellent knowledge of SQL, including complex joins, aggregations, window functions, stored procedures and query optimisation.
- Strong practical experience with Snowflake.
- Strong practical experience with PostgreSQL.
- Experience designing relational database schemas and analytical data models.
- Experience developing ETL/ELT pipelines and production data-processing workflows.
- Experience with data validation, reconciliation and data-quality frameworks.
- Experience working with orchestration technologies such as Airflow, SSIS or similar platforms.
- Experience with AWS S3 or equivalent cloud-based file and data ingestion.
- Strong understanding of REST API design and backend architecture.
- Experience with automated unit and integration testing.
- Understanding of application security, database security and secure handling of sensitive data.
- Ability to troubleshoot database, application and data-pipeline issues in production.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

What We Are Looking For
We are looking for an engineer who is comfortable working across both the data and application layers. The ideal candidate can investigate raw healthcare data, design and optimise SQL transformations, build reliable data pipelines, expose trusted analytical results through Python APIs, and troubleshoot the complete flow from source data through to the end-user application.
The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong focus on data accuracy, software quality, security, performance, auditability and maintainability.
